Antique Quilts

Good Morning.  I am quilting on my first antique quilt for my good friend Marlena Mann in New Mexico.  She is entering the quilt in a contest in February.  I am a bit nervous.  But as my husband tells me, “the design is the teacher”.  It is really true, she just wants a beautiful overall pattern,  I am using the Tex 30 Natural thread that I purchased at Rocky Mountain Quilting on Friday.  So glad I bought this thread.  It will be subtle and elegant with all of tender loving blocks that were carefully pieced together.

I know for me, when I imagine the original designer and constructer of the quilt, what she thought about, how did she obtain the tiny blocks, what child’s dress or shirt was used to re-purpose for this quilt?  How many years has the quilt been sitting in a closet waiting for this next step? What do you think about when you are quilting your quilts? These are all questions that will remain woven into the fabric of this quilt.  I do love this work.  Making books has the same effect on me, fascinating.  Create Everyday!

I love, love, love to make things. One of the first gifts that my husband gave me was a set of calligraphy pens and instructions that he purchased when he lived in Ireland for two years. That gift has been the wonderful foundation for my everything fiber/paper/ink obsession. On our 10th anniversary he gave me a spinning wheel and on our 15th anniversary a harp. He is a great gift giver and I am thankful for the bounty that I have been blessed with.
