Introducing Victoria Simpson...

Yesterday, I spent the day in Rexburg, ID.  I was glad to visit with great friends and spend the bulk of my time there creating German Stars.  It is a tradition with the German people that the family hangs a star with a light in the window.  Our family has German ancestry and I wanted to continue that tradition.

My good friend, Carla Jimison surprised me two years ago by making me my own German stars.  This year I wanted to know how to make my own, to give them to our sons for a Christmas decoration gift.  Carla gladly agreed to show me how.  It was so much fun, what made it even better is that our son Jordan and his new wife Ashley (they have been married for 2 months) came and made stars with us.  I worked from 2pm until 11:30pm.  We were all tired and not quite finished but we had the time of our lives and now we have fun starts to hang in our windows.  I also only need to make 5 more stars because Jordan and Ashley made their own.

As I begin this blog, I am making a commitment to my readers that I will respond everyday to this blog as well as to the eventual posts.  I want to share my book arts/fiber/literacy journey with you.  I believe that the current economy is a stepping stone for us to connect with each other in more meaningful ways.  One of those ways is through blogging, additional ways is making things together.  Last night as we were cutting, folding, gluing with paper, I was in my element.  I spend the bulk of my time, now researching family literacy, but everyday, I spend some time making things, because that helps me to make sense of all of the mountains of reading that I do to earn this Ph.D.  I wonder how you all feel about this?  Do you ever just become overwhelmed and need to just make something?  I know I do everyday.  That is what this blog will be about our journey to make books, quilts and sharing with those we love our family that we live with and our family that we call friends.

I look forward to reading your thoughts and seeing what you are creating in this journey.  Create everyday.

I love, love, love to make things. One of the first gifts that my husband gave me was a set of calligraphy pens and instructions that he purchased when he lived in Ireland for two years. That gift has been the wonderful foundation for my everything fiber/paper/ink obsession. On our 10th anniversary he gave me a spinning wheel and on our 15th anniversary a harp. He is a great gift giver and I am thankful for the bounty that I have been blessed with.
